The Knowledge-based economy stands in focus for much of European policy and is also a policy issue within the OECD. The discourse on the coming of the knowledge (based) society and/or the knowledge (based) economy – with roots in the 1980s may be looked upon as a transformation of the still older discussions on the post industrial society (cf. eg. the foreword in Bell, 1973/76).
